Thoughts on Turkey 1/4 : Doggy Fetish

Having just got back from an extremely enjoyable week away in the Aegean resort of Çeşme, I was left wondering: exactly how do stray dogs drink?

There’s no fresh water available from nearby streams that I saw, the weather is hot but not humid and the Turk’s are not renowned animal lovers. So, presumably, stray dogs have to learn to adapt. There was the makings of a sizeable pack of them running around the harbour, yet they all looked healthy enough.

Various research on the Internet has yielded the not unexpected information that the majority of urine is comprised of water. In fact, the Singapore Science Centre helpfully gives us a breakdown of the composition of an average day’s production:

Water 1.4 L/day
Urea 1820 mg/100mL
Uric acid 42 mg/100mL
Creatinine 196 mg/100mL
Sodium ion 128 mEq/L
Potassium ion 60 mEq/L
Chloride ion 134 mEq/L
Bicarbonate ion 14 mEq/L
pH 4.5 to 8.0

Now, this is for your common-or-garden human being, but I’m guessing that the content of doggy urine is not overly dissimilar.

Can you see where this is going?

You see, I’ve been thinking about this and, based on the circumstances, the sight that my girlfriend Ellie and I were confronted with on our first night in Çeşme is not all that remarkable. I can’t bring myself to write any more about it so, instead, I’ve drawn a picture:

 Doggy Fetish

Yes, I admit it’s fairly rough. Unfortunately, it’s also fairly accurate. The fact that I’m a dog lover accounts for my attempt to defend the mutts in question. But there can be no doubt and no mistake. We plainly saw one dog urinating in another dog’s mouth. And not just a little bit either. We’re talking a veritable torrent.

Call it survival, call it some kind of weird-ass doggy fetish, call it what you will. The fact remains: Turkish dogs are sick.

Did the sight stir your loins? give you a role playing game for later?

    Indubitably.
