End of an Era…

This coming Saturday I begin my life as a DINKY as I move out of Davidson Road after two and a bit years and into a new flat with my girlfriend. As such, I would like to present to you, in no particular order, the top ten moments from my time in Croydon…

  1. The Battersea Petting Zoo with Keef and Jim. Getting through a bottle of Keef’s whiskey mix, abusing rowers then going out in Croydon. Jim pulling three fifty-year old women and then telling an overweight gentleman who asked him for a light to die of ‘fat cancer’. Said gentleman waddling ineffectively after him, shouting abuse and hoping for a fight.
  2. Finding out I could get tickets for Wrestlemania XXII with Raj, Rod and ‘Todd’. Hanging out with JSP in Chicago.
  3. Drinking games with Ellie, Keef, JC and Tawny.
  4. Heading to Nashville, Tennessee with Jim to see The Flaming Lips play. Losing my passport in Atlanta Airport and receiving a frisking of biblical proportions (the last part being not exactly a highlight, but memorable nonetheless).
  5. Getting a lift home from a nightclub at 7am on a Tuesday morning off an Australian guy who had never driven in this country before… the wrong way down a one-way street in Trafalgar Square… with a bus thundering towards us. Going to work the next day.
  6. Our holiday in Turkey.
  7. Making Ellie run to my work with me at 1am because I was convinced I had left the door unlocked the previous day, and that the place was being robbed. Arriving to find it locked up and very peaceful.
  8. Going to Calgary, Canada with Keef to see Simon and Niki. Insisting that we take a pilgrimage to visit Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart’s house.
  9. Barbeque with Ellie, Nige, Selina, Khuram, Matt and Jen.
  10. All day pub crawl round Highbury with Jim, followed by a surprisingly good Lostprophets gig.

Other highlights include discovering Flotation Toy Warning with Khuram, a weekend away in Dublin, Borderline on my 25th Birthday, vegetarian Keef being so drunk he didn’t realise he was eating a meat kebab, being thrown out of Corrinas Nightclub in Sidmouth on New Year’s Eve, JC in a wedding veil, staying up all night to watch wrestling with Jim whilst Ellie was staying over, The Clientele in a bowling alley, a long weekend in Amsterdam, crashing Si and Niki’s honeymoon, being caught enthusiastically rapping in West Croydon and many, many more.

UPDATE - Jim reminded me of the following I left out:

General drunken debauchery. Getting confused between Bucharest and Budapest. Cries of “oh Jim!?” upon finding various items in the lounge first thing in the morning. Keef passing out on the toilet. General lack of hygiene around the house. Ridiculous drinking till 4 in the morning, singing. Having to listen to the neighbours argue/baby crying/ having sex. Poorly fitted doors allowing us to virtually be in each others room whilst in the throws of passion! Drunken trips to Brighton-throwing ashtrays at seagulls. Boiler being very much broken for a good couple of days in the middle of winter. Both surviving intact despite a chainsaw being in the house. Meeting our new house mate ‘mousey‘. Pipe dreams of owning goldfish never materialising. Sunday drinking. Well, any day drinking. The death of the pope. The death of Eddie. Both not having a girl back at the same time as the other until last few weeks of the house.

To be honest, nothing of interest ever happened to us!

I note with interest that many of your highlights involve actually leaving Croydon and going somewhere better.

  2. Phil Saunders Says:

The beauty of Croydon is that it’s cheap to live in and better places are very close!
