I just read the Snopes article and my last message was just one of his points. The conclusion of the article being that ridiculous claims have and will be made about women's sizes and Marilyn through misunderstanding/misuse/abuse of stats. And I'm too much of a wimp to comment on women's sizes anymore.

I have been led to believe that the reasoning behind this is less an evil lying women's movement (as Marilyn probably did wear a size 16), and more a trend of cynical marketing by clothes companies/shops aimed at making women feel better about getting larger (and spend more money) by progressively making the size numbers for dresses smaller. Which is why dresses of the same number can vary in size between shops, especially between those aimed at younger (teenage) smaller women and those for other women. Although it is true the stat given about Marilyn is misleading: as a size 16 is not the same size as one 50 years ago, the point behind it stays: that there's a general trend in models becoming slimmer and less representative of the general public. Or maybe I've just been misinformed by the member of the shadowy, chubby female Illuminati.
