One Flu Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

It appears that we are all going to die. This is a bad thing.

Or are we? The Independent disagrees in their headline story ‘We need to be inoculated against outbreaks of panic’. Even the comments at the end seem to be fairly laid-back, one noting ‘No one is panicking save the press which, it would seem, would love nothing more than to have the whole nation locked inside venturing out only to buy more papers.’

Actually, that’s not true. I was panicking last night, just a bit, but that was mostly due to the BBC’s really alarmist blanket coverage.

Compare the Independent’s headlining approach to that of the Mail - ‘One step away from a pandemic: WHO chiefs raise threat level as they say mass swine flu outbreak is imminent’. Which is totally the level of reporting we’ve come to expect from the Mail. Oh and the Sun kicked off with a black front cover and ‘IT JUST GOT WORSE’ in the biggest font possible.

And yet, it’s The Independent that’s hurtling towards financial oblivion.

That being said, we might still all die. I’m just trying to put a brave face on it.
