Thoughts on Turkey 4/4 : Old Habits

Friday, August 4th, 2006

The fact that Greece and Turkey dislike each other intensely shouldn’t be fresh news to anybody. In fact, the problems presented by these two ancient enemies in International Relations formed a major part of my degree course. As such, I was interested to see what evidence of this was to be found in Turkey. Interestingly, Izmir, the region we visited, is geographically and ethnically close to Greece and, as such, I was expecting a melting pot.

However, it is fair to say that Greco-Turkish relations have thawed somewhat in recent times. A solution to the interminable question of Cyprus is inching closer and Greece has been one of the main proponents of Turkish succession to the EU, despite Turkey’s dismal human rights record. As such, I was fairly amused to take the following picture on a stroll around Çeşme:

Is anyone seriously going to try and tell me that the Greek flag was hung upside down accidentally?

God Save the Queen! (Seriously).
