Nigerian Scammer Baiting
For those unfamiliar with 419-baiting I have included a brief history. The scam it all stems from is nothing new, starting off in the eighties in the form of unsolicited letters, later faxes and now e-mails. The scammer contacts the unfortunate scamee with details of a strings-free deal that seems far too good to be true. Of course, it is. As the scamee gets more and more indoctrinated into the deal, the scammer begins adding financial stipulations. The theory is that the scamee is so blinded by greed that he sees the expense of a few thousand dollars as little compared to the huge financial windfall he will eventually be receiving. Of course, very few people actually fall for these scams now: baiting the scammers into wasting as much time as possible on wild goose chases has become an international pastime amongst techy types. These 419-scammers, named after the Nigerian legislation that makes such e-mail scams illegal, are increasingly becoming the bane of spam senders worldwide. Now, I’m keen for my bite at the cherry.
I have been getting these e-mails in my inbox for about three months before I decided to turn my hand to the noble art. Here are the results, beginning with the initial contact e-mail:

Your information was given to me by a member of the South African Export Promotion Council (SAEPC) who was with the Government delegation on a trip to your country for a United Nations bilateral conference talk on sustainable development to encourage foreign investors. I have decided to seek a confidential co-operation with you in the execution of a deal hereunder for the benefit of all parties and hope you will keep it confidential because of the nature of the business.
Within the Department of Minerals and Energy where I work as an Assistant Director of Audit, with the co-operation of two other top officials, we have in our possession an overdue contractor payment in US Dollars funds.
The said funds represent certain percentage of the contract value Executed on behalf of my Department by a foreign contracting firm, (Pearls Ltd)which we the officials over-invoiced to the amount of US$15,200,000 (Fifteen Million Two Hundred Thousand US Dollars).
Since the present elected Government is determined to pay foreign contractors all debts owed, so as to maintain good relations with foreign governments and non-governmental agencies, we included our bills for approvals with the Department of Finance and the Reserve Bank of South Africa (RBSA). We are 100+% sure of funds approvals to anyone or company we(The Audit Committee) recommend as part of the sub-contractors who did jobs for the Department. We are seeking your assistance to front as the sub-contractor of the unclaimed funds, since we are not allowed to operate foreign accounts. Details and change of beneficiary information upon application for claim to reflect payment and approvals will be secured on behalf of You/your Company.
My colleagues and I are prepared to give you US$2.5m while we take US$7.4m and the balance of US$5.3m for taxes and miscellaneous expenses incurred.
This business is completely safe and secure, provided you treat it with utmost confidentiality. It does not matter whether You/your Company does contract projects, as a transfer of rights will be secured in favor of You/your Company through the Federal high Court of South Africa before we can proceed. I have reposed my confidence in you and hope that you will not disappoint us. Kindly notify me immediately for further details upon your acceptance of this proposal.

Almost immediately I received the following response complete with a downloadable form requesting my bank details which I was to fax off ‘immediately’.

I convey the approval of my colleague that I continue discussions with you on this mutually beneficial project. Yes you can help me, please read the details below and provide a confidential telephone and fax number so that I can speak to you and we proceed. Do complete the attached application and return to me via fax(office) 27-8343-18733 or as attachment to enable us file for claim and for use to legalize the business.
For the purpose of clarity, we are a three-man member of the Contracts Auditing Committee (CAC) of the Department of Minerals and Energy vested with the authority to appraise and approve contracts payments according to the priority of the South African government. By virtue of our official positions we have been able to, over time, through hindsight of mining contracts and careful manipulation of contract award documents secured for ourselves a contract amount of US$15.2m (Fifteen Million, Two hundred thousand United States Dollars) only.
The source of this funds is as follows: In the first quarter of 1999 this committee was mandated to review and award contracts to the tune of US$400 million US dollars to a group of foreign firms for the supply construction and installation of Power generation equipments and other construction equipments to boost production output from our numerous Mining Operations. During this process, my colleague and I decided and agreed among ourselves to deliberately over-invoice the total contract sum from US$400 million to US$415.2 million United States dollars with the intention of sharing the balance sum of US$15.2 Million amongst ourselves. The Federal Government of South Africa has since last year approved this over invoiced sum of US$415.2 Million for us as the payment for the contract done. The sum ofUS$400 million have been paid to the Foreign companies concerned as contract entitlements for the various contracts done, since the companies are entitled to US$400 million dollars only. We are now left with US$15.2 million dollars balance in the Contractors Payment account of the Government in a bank account in Europe under the control of Reserve Bank of South Africa. This is the fund we intend to disburse amongst ourselves.
We need your assistance, the fund is secured in this escrow account of the Government in a European Bank specifically set aside for the settlement of outstanding payments to foreign contractors. Due to the fact that we are highly placed civil servants, we cannot do this by ourselves, as we are prohibited by the South African Civil Service Laws from opening or operating foreign accounts in our names while still in active government service, making it impossible for us to acquire the money in our names right now. Therefore, I have been delegated as a matter of trust and urgency by my colleague in this department to look for an overseas partner into whose account we will transfer the sum of US$15.2 Million. Hence we wrote you this letter. My Colleagues and I have agreed that if you or your company can front as the beneficiary of these funds on our behalf, you or your Company will be given 15% of the US$15.2Million (US$2.28M). Needless to say, the trust reposed on you at this juncture is enormous.
In return we demand your complete honesty and trust. You must however NOTE that this transaction will be strictly based on the following terms and conditions as we have stated below; (a) Our conviction of your transparent honesty and diligence, (b) That you would treat this transaction with utmost secrecy and confidentiality; (c) That you will not ask for more money as your share or try to sit on the funds once it is under your custody, or any form of blackmail.
Please, note that this transaction is 100% legal and risk free as we will only proceed after we have gotten official papers from the federal high Court here in Pretoria, South Africa supporting our claim and we hope to conclude this transaction within Ten (10) working days. This is because all the modalities for the execution and completion of the transaction is already in place. We are looking forward to doing business with you and solicit your Total Confidentiality in this transaction. Please acknowledge the receipt of this letter using the below telephone and fax numbers. We also require you to keep this transaction confidential and to yourself only. We shall guide you on how to handle this transaction from your side so that we do not face any complications arising from mishandling or from too many people knowing about what we have in hand. I will like to speak to you personally to bring you into the complete picture of this business transaction if there is any part you do not understand fully. Your urgent response will be highly appreciated to enable us transfer this fund under this last quarter of the year 2003. We will procure and send to you immediately the appropriate documents (i.e. subsequent power of Attorney from the High court of South Africa transferring all rights to you/your company to receive the funds as contract payment) and draft letter to the Reserve Bank of South Africa (RBSA) through the supervising body- Department of Finance which you will fill and append your signature indicating you/your company name as the new beneficiary for prompt remittance of the funds (US$15.2m) into your nominated bank account from the Bank in Europe. I have some experience of banking and realise that such a transaction requires no little financial contribution on my part. As such, I am unwilling to provide the details requested until you let me have some idea of the monies you may require.
You must understand, my little daughter, Maria, is very sick. The money you are proffering will go some way towards ensuring she has suitable treatment throughout her last days on GOD’s Earth. However, I feel I cannot jeopardise her comfort by entering into business transactions in which I am being deliberately kept in the dark!

Well Joseph it seems that we cannot get on. This is a sad turn of events but in these days of computer fraud and male-on-male rape I find it best to not distribute my details willy-nilly to people who randomly e-mail me out of nowhere.

Dear brother, I am weeping where I am, you did not follow my instructions, although I do not blame you for Marias death, but you could have saved her if you have done what I ask you to do. It is the devil that took Maria away, and you ignorance have given the devil victory over Maria.
When Jesus christ died, he went to hell and seized the key of death from the devil, so he has the key of life and death with him, and we are joint heirs with christ, this makes us have access to same kind of life and power he has over life and death, you need to leave and think in this consciousness for it to answer to you. I followed your instructions to the letter, there was no saving Maria and obviously GOD hates me with a passion not seen since Lot’s wife was transformed into a pillar of salt outside Sodom.
The devil may have had victory over Maria and now I feel that if I am ever to see her again then he must gain victory over me as well.
